Leopold Museum exhibits masterpieces from the Heidi Horten Collection

The exhibition “WOW! The Heidi Horten Collection” is the first public unveiling of one of Europe’s most sensational private art collections. Its presentation at the Leopold Museum fulfills the collector’s long-cherished wish to make the masterpieces she has carefully assembled since the 1990s, spanning from Gustav Klimt to Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst, available to a broad audience. The collector’s philanthropic dedication is further underscored by her support of educational programs to benefit children and adolescents, as well as weekly free admission to the museum for the general public. The exhibition, curated by Agnes Husslein-Arco, showcases 170 works by seventy five artists and follows a chronological sequence of twentieth-century Western art. It also offers a unique view into the broad spectrum of art the collector has gathered over the past thirty-five years. “The mid-1990s were an excepti

The Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt presents the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat in Germany

Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) is acknowledged today as one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. More than 30 years after his last solo exhibition in a public collection in Germany, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is presenting a major survey devoted to this American artist. Featuring more than 100 works, the exhibition is the first to focus on Basquiat’s relationship to music, text, film and television, placing his work within a broader cultural context. National Gallery of Ireland opens exhibition of works by German painter Emil Nolde

A major exhibition of work by pioneering German Expressionist painter Emil Nolde (1867-1956) is being presented at the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, from 14 February to 10 June 2018. Emil Nolde: Colour is Life is a collaboration between the National Gallery of Ireland, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Emil Nolde Foundation in Seebüll. The exhibition comprises over 120 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, specially selected from the Emil Nolde Foundation, the artist’s former home in north Germany. It spans Nolde’s career from his early atmospheric paintings of his homeland right through to the intensely coloured oils, to his so-called ‘unpainted pictures’ – works done on small pieces of paper during the Third Reich, when Nolde was branded a ‘degenerate’ artist and forbidden to work as a professional artist. The works on show also include Nolde’s famous
