Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam opens 'Rembrandt-Velázquez. Dutch & Spanish Masters'

Rembrandt-Velázquez. Dutch & Spanish Masters will present an outstanding selection of paintings by Dutch and Spanish Masters of the 17th century, including some of the greatest pieces by, amongst others, Rembrandt, Velázquez, Murillo, Hals, Zurbarán and Vermeer. In this exhibition, 60 paintings by Spanish and Dutch masters hang alongside each other in pairs, resulting in fascinating visual dialogues on realism and eternity, religion and beauty. This exhibition, which will be on show from 11 October 2019 to 19 January 2020, is the result of a special partnership between the Rijksmuseum and the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, marking the Year of Rembrandt 2019 and the 200th anniversary of the Prado. During a time of war and political tension, the Dutch and Spanish painting traditions approached closer to each other than it is generally thought. The Sam & Adele Golden Gallery opens an exhibition of works by Susan Roth

Susan Roth, a self-described non-objective painter, offers challenging eccentric outer profiles in many of the paintings in her exhibition BLACK IS A COLOR. The fourteen acrylic paintings exhibited range in date from 1982 through 2019, and trace her unique and individual approach to the shaping of the canvas as it responds to the compositional elements within. Roth takes full advantage of the range of acrylic paints and mediums and had the opportunity to work closely with Sam Golden, the founder of Golden Artist Colors, to create new acrylic products. Her paintings contain collaged canvas elements as well as the low relief provided by the acrylic paints. A Roth painting can have wildly demanding outer shapes that resemble the state boundaries of Idaho or Nebraska, or they can be subtle trapezoids, or, though infrequently, conventional rectangles. Her choice of shape, whether extreme, or whether adhering to reco

Rodrigo Franzão: Industrial strength stitching

Not many textile artists run to the hardware store for supplies. But then again, Rodrigo Franzão is not just any textile artist. Inspired as a child by the textile nature of the wires, copper and other materials his electrician father used at work, Rodrigo has imagined and executed the most incredible works using those very same materials.

He’s also mastered an ability to turn seemingly cumbersome industrial materials into delicate and intricate installation pieces. And his constant experimentation has led to surprising results. You’re sure to find yourself asking ‘how did he do that?’ while viewing his creative work.

Rodrigo lives in Brazil. He graduated in Arts, Letters and MBA in Art History and Visual Culture. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions across the globe. Of note were his solo exhibits Katharsis at the National Arts Club in New York, USA (2015) and Surface and Abstractions at the Odivelas Exhibition Center in Lisbon, Portugal (2016).
