Scenic Alberta Circular Suncatchers 2017

Earlier this year we were asked if we could make 2 small circle suncatchers that represented Alberta. The one on the left depicted Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, the foothills and Alberta’s Provincial Flower the Alberta Rose.

The other one on the right depicted Alberta’s farming lands, our rolling hills along with an Alberta Wheat Pool Elevator, unfortunately few of these prairie sentinels remain on our landscape.

Both circles measured approximately 6 inches in diameter and were surrounded with a decorative brass edging.  After soldering both had black patina applied, cleaned and then polished.

These were taken to England as gifts by our client, and we were told that they were very well received and appreciated.

Bea’s Fedora

We were delighted to discover that one of the standard colours offered by Custom Woollen Mills, of rural Carstairs, Alberta, is an excellent match for Bea’s winter coat.  The wool was ordered, the hat is made, and now the only remaining question is “How shall we trim it ?”  One of the options is to add a just-right small peacock feather to the brim; there is a lovely mauvey-pink satin ribbon that really highlights the rich texture and heathered colour of the wool.  Hmmmmm…..

Decisions are (mostly) made.  Bea’s hat now has a rosy pink and mixed green “flower” –I am using the term rather loosely !–on the brim, and the pink ribbon is in storage, for just in case.  We agreed that the peacock feather just didn’t do what we wanted it to do. 

 

The Artisan Feltmaker has another happy custom-order customer ! 

 

You can now see and purchase a portion of my hat selection in Olds, Alberta, at Different Strokes, too.

 

Next brief display and sale is Thursday, November 3, from 3 to 7 pm at the Arboretum Christmas Market in the Trochu, Alberta Community Hall.  A concession stand will be open, too, to revive the overwhelmed shoppers !

Eagle Circle June 2017

In June 2017 this Eagle circle panel was given as a gift for The Most Worthy Grand Patron of The Order of Eastern Star at its Grand Chapter 2017 meeting in Calgary, Alberta.  The circle is approximately 8 inches in diameter and ended up going to Pennsylvania USA.

Night Sky Photography – ISS Flyover

Not my usual kind of nature photography, but I do enjoy studying the night sky. On a whim I recently decided to see if I could catch the International Space Station passing between the Moon and us, and sure enough, less than a week later it was predicted to transit the Moon, and I could see it from my own back yard! So, on September 27th, I set up my small telescope and camera to try and photograph the ISS flyby.

This is a composite image of 12 frames I captured of the ISS transiting the Moon.

Peggy’s Cove Nova Scotia

A few years ago we were on a family trip to the Maritimes and wanted to spend some time along the coast. We spent some time in Halifax and headed down to Peggy’s Cove. This is one of the most photographed locations on the East Coast, and we were travelling with family, so I didn’t initially want to take a lot of time to photograph the area. While my extended family and my kids were exploring around the Lighthouse, my wife suggested I head down to the harbour and town to get some pictures. I said there wasn’t really any point, as it has been photographed so much, but she replied “But no one has done it in your way”. Perhaps so, and I walked down from the lighthouse, and captured some of the best images of my career.
