Spruce Grove | Call for Feature Artists for 2019—Deadline Approaching

The July 31st deadline is quickly approaching!

The Allied Arts Council of Spruce Grove welcomes all Alberta Artists working in any medium to submit a proposal as a Feature Artist for a solo or group show to be held at the Spruce Grove Art Gallery in 2019. Each show will be for a duration of three to four weeks, and will include a reception.

Devastating earthquake in Mexico unearths ancient rain god temple

A devastating earthquake that struck central Mexico last September gave way to a fascinating discovery: remnants of a rain god temple within an Aztec pyramid. The temple, dedicated to a deity called Tlaloc and located within the Teopanzolco pyramid in Cuernavaca, Morelos state, belonged to the region’s Tlahuica culture. As a result of the earthquake, “the pyramid suffered considerable rearrangement of the core of its structure,” said archaeologist Barbara Koniecza of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The greatest damage was at the top, where two temples had already been discovered — one dedicated to the Mesoamerican god of the sun and war, Huitzilopochtli, and another to Tlaloc. “The floor of both shrines sank and bent, which also put their stability in danger,” Koniecza said.

Calgary | Artist in Residence: Children’s Artist/Illustrator

Children’s Artist/Illustrator

Deadline to apply is August 10, 2018.

The Calgary Public Library invites applications for the paid position of Artist in Residence: Children’s Artist/Illustrator at New Central Library (NCL) in downtown Calgary for the Fall of 2018.

This residency recognizes the contribution of children’s artists to literature and to Calgary’s culture and seeks to introduce Library patrons, especially children and educators, to artists and art forms they may not otherwise experience while providing opportunities to meet artists, observe the artistic process and participate in artmaking. The residency includes a commission for the annual Library Goes to Kindergarten Library Card illustration.
